Growing with a Nameko grow kit
Growing Nameko mushrooms from a ready-made fruit block is a relatively simple process. Here are detailed instructions to help you grow these delicious mushrooms:
Supplies:
- Nameko grow kit (also called spawn block)
- A plastic bag or plastic container with a lid (e.g. a plastic storage bin)
- A plant sprayer with water
- A room with a constant temperature of approximately 18-22°C (preferably a dark, damp room such as a basement or a closet)
- A clean, damp cloth or paper towels
Steps:
-
Preparation: Make sure all your supplies are clean. Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your work surface is clean. This helps to prevent any contamination.
-
Preparing the plastic bag or container: Take a plastic bag, for example a pedal bin bag, that you can pull over the block. Make a few small holes in this for the supply of fresh oxygen. If you are using a plastic container, also make quite a few small holes in the lid and in the sides of the container for airflow. This allows the mushrooms to breathe as they grow.
-
Preparing the fruit block: Cut the top of the grow kit completely open (as high as possible). This helps activate and hydrate the mushrooms before they start growing.
-
Placement of the fruit block: Place the fruit block under the plastic bag or in the plastic container. If you are using a plastic bag, place the fruit block on a damp cloth or paper towels to drain excess water. If you are using a plastic container, place a damp cloth or paper towels on the bottom of the container and place the fruit block on top.
-
Incubation: Place the plastic bag or container in an area with a constant temperature of approximately 18-22°C. Make sure the room is dark, as mushrooms need light to grow. Allow the fruit block to incubate for about a week until you see small pins appear on the block.
-
Growth of the mushrooms: Now place the block in daylight and ensure that the humidity is maintained. Have your Nameko mushrooms fully emerged? Then this is the time when you can start harvesting your Nameko. Carefully cut them off with a sharp knife or scissors, leaving a small piece of the stem for the mushrooms to regrow.
-
Repeat Harvest: After harvesting the first batch of mushrooms, allow the fruit block to incubate again in the same area. After a few weeks, mushrooms will start to grow again and you can harvest again. This process can be repeated several times until the fruit block is exhausted.
-
Storage: Store the mushrooms in the refrigerator in a paper bag or airtight container. They should be consumed within a few days for the best taste and texture.
